the insertion of a temporary garden ‘vu’òn’ into an ancient penicillin factory by swiss architecture firm bureau A creates a miniature world in itself. the installation is part of a new cultural dynamic that’s emerging within the soviet area in hanoi. the warehouse is located at the border of the old french neighborhood and the initiative for its ‘tadioto’ project came from the american, vietnamese writer, journalist and artist, duc nguyen qui. local artists, fashion designers and other creative people are also contributing to this unique space, which is used to host a diverse range of intimate cultural events. the factory was transformed during the weeks of the garden’s construction, with new boutiques, bars and cafes popping up from one day to the next.

‘the first impulse has been to document the whole factory. given the rapidity of the alterations that were happening within the short period of the installation, the urge to keep the traces of the marks, wounds, cracks of this nostalgic working machine appeared obvious.‘ says bureau a.

the design was built with the help of vietnamese builders using locally found, simple materials: bamboo, autochthonous plants and a carpet of 6500 charcoal bricks. inserted into the industrial atmosphere, the garden was intended to be used as a place for meditation, debate and intimate thinking. during its installation, the ‘vu’òn’ also held a series of seven lectures and a workshop, gathering people from all over to discuss the topic of public space.
