brick volumes + wooden organic cladding form 'boomerang house' by AJG in denmark

in the district of risskov, denmark, the ‘boomerang house‘ by AJG architects takes shape as a self-built villa amid the lush natural landscape. surrounded by tall hedges and mature trees, and in close proximity to both the water and the forest, the project is designed to highlight the beauty of the site, while maintaining the green, tranquil atmosphere.

the architectural concept of the house is radically different from conventional planning practices of the day. typically, a building volume would be planned parallel to one of the property boundaries, in order to allocate as much free garden space as possible. after carefully studying the lot, in consideration of the owner’s demands, copenhagen-based AJG architects deemed a conventional organization would not take full advantage of the garden area, while a large portion of the facades would not optimize conditions for sufficient daylight and generous outdoor views.

project leader kasper ax proposed a bold design where the volume takes a central position within the green open space. in this way, ‘a feeling of fusion between house and garden’ is achieved, while the boundary between interior and exterior becomes blurry. the organic design thus divides the yard into a number of contiguous outdoor living zones, giving it high utility value at all times of the day. the house itself emerges as two heavy, bricked solids at each end of the garden, that carry a lightweight, floating organic roof clad in ash wood, thus creating a central open and transparent common living area with connection to all portions of the house.
