siqueira + azul arquitetura curates a breezy, light-filled 'book house' in brazil

crafting space with function, brazil-based studio siqueira + azul arquitetura realizes its ‘book house annex.’ the partitions at once host the occupant’s large collection of books while defining the boundaries of the breezy extension to a pre-existing house. the addition houses a multi-use program, offering extended living spaces along with a concentrated area for the occupant’s research and archiving. the design celebrates the temperate climate of the site and the lush greenery on all side — the boundaries of the space are left open to the natural breeze and invite the natural context to dialogue with the interior.

based in both rio de janeiro and são paulo, siqueira + azul arquitetura curates its book house annex as a light-filled pavilion. the interior gradually opens outward onto a private garden, looking onto its natural surroundings through a row of slender white columns. the space is characterized by a single, roof plane which seems to float above the bookshelf partitions. alongside this zone, the enclosure is further open outward with a metallic grid roof structure hosting glass panels. here, the slender and lightweight construction generates a more linear expression, filled with sunlight and projecting a pattern of shadows onto the stone flooring.

the team at siqueira + azul arquitetura comments on the design of its book house annex:the mobility offered by the sliding doors allow for the integration of the architecture with its surroundings, opening space for cross ventilation and natural lighting. presence of wood on the bookshelves seeks to enhance the horizontal planes and reinforce the library as a prominent element.
