bonetti/kozerski clads the pace gallery NY headquarters in black volcanic stone and metal

the new headquarters of pace gallery located in new york city‘s chelsea art district are due to open in september 2019. designed by multidisciplinary firm bonetti/kozerski architecture, the eight-story building will be more than double pace‘s current NY footprint, measuring approximately 75,000 sq.ft (6967.728 sqm), 10,000 (929 sqm) of which will comprise the combined outdoor exhibition space.

the building’s design by bonetti/kozerski seeks to present a more open and accessible model of art display and engagement, with an outdoor gallery that is visually connected to the high line and the historical chelsea surroundings. metal-clad in and with a black volcanic stone façade, the pace gallery encloses a variety of exhibition spaces, from expansive column-free galleries to a suspended double story penthouse. additionally, a unique lighting concept on the second and ground floors—developed in collaboration with lighting designer arnold chan—which automatically adjusts the ambient light to complement the hue and vibrancy of the works on view. the ground floor will also feature a public library showcasing pace’s extensive collection of more than 10,000-catalogued volumes and 20’ (6 meter) ceilings for rotating exhibitions.
