on an 11-acre site with a south-facing slope american studio black shack architects has constructed a private residence amongst a dense patch of junipers, sage, cacti, and tall grass.
the house is positioned near the bottom of the site, butting up against an area of old junipers to enjoy privacy while at the same time leave the landscape untouched. although a rather large house of five bedrooms, the program is broken up into various masses that break down its scale from any side. rusting steel and horizontal wood siding make up the majority of the exterior material palette, contrasting the green hues of the landscape. at the center of the home, the living room is flanked by large operable glass walls that when opened become a protected exterior space. the organization of rooms lends to the changing lifestyles of a multi-generational family. one can find privacy in the sprawled out footprint but can easily become a part of the social atmosphere with all the social spaces located strategically and conveniently in the center.
