'berkshire' by morrison seifert murphy architects

‘berkshire’ is a single-family home situated in a neighbourhood where there are many large mature trees in the front lots of homes, while in the back there is busy thoroughfare. these restrictions became the starting point for the ‘berkshire’ project.

the U-shaped structure has its back to the chaotic motorway and opens to a courtyard which is shaded by a canopy of trees. the U-shape encloses a courtyard area which is the centre of the home, with many of the house’s rooms opening up onto the outdoor space. this arrangement allows for the house to block out the traffic noise. it is the only modern home in the neighbourhood and most likely the largest, so lead architect of the project, lionel morrison decided to make the exterior a dark, gray-green color to camouflage the dwelling into the green environment in which it sits, so that it blends well with the rest of the neighbourhood.
