Belen Ilarri Studio revitalizes a historic winery in a small village near Valencia as a modern home while maintaining its original essence and character. For the CASU Residence, one of the most significant changes was the creation of an exterior patio, which did not exist in the original 1930s-built structure. This new space provides natural light while enhancing ventilation, greatly improving the quality of life within the home. A curved staircase is also introduced, enhancing connectivity and integrating the main floor with the lower level which once housed the wine vats and storage tanks.

With an investment of €118,000, this 155-square-meter transformation has been carried out with respect for the site’s past while adapting the architecture to contemporary needs. For Belen Ilarra Studio, the main challenge was preserving the identity of a winery built in the 1930s through careful restoration, and ensuring comfort and livability for the residents.

Inside, the Spanish studio fosters the creation of naturally connected living spaces through an organic transition between the old tanks and wine vats. This results in new areas that reinterpret the spaces where grapes and wine were once stored, while also preserving the memory of the site. In addition to carefully integrating the modern elements necessary for contemporary living, the design respects the original texture of the walls, retaining the characteristic surfaces of the winery.
