a fluid facade for Sleeping Lab·Tang

Atelier d’More has completed the second project for Sleeping Lab, this time located in Tangdazhuang Village, Taihu Town, Tongzhou District, Beijing. Known as Sleeping Lab·Tang, this project transforms a previously abandoned structure into a contemporary boutique hotel. Following the success of its first Sleeping Lab, the architecture studio was entrusted with reimagining the site to blend with its surroundings while revitalizing its original character.

The China-based architects approached the renovation by prioritizing flow, connection, and extension — hallmarks of their design philosophy. The original facade was disjointed, featuring mismatched rooflines that contributed to a monotonous streetscape. To address this, the studio created a dynamic entrance by extending lines outward from the corners of the entrance arch to the building’s edges, forming a new structural framework. The lines softened into a curved recess, transforming the flat wall into a sculptural form. This new entrance serves to add a sense of motion to the static structure while at once functioning as a rain canopy that fluidly integrates with the building.

Preserving the Past with an Architectural Facelift

Prior to Atelier d’More’s renovation of Sleeping Lab·Tang, the pre-existing structure was in a state of disrepair, with collapsed roofs and a courtyard overrun by weeds. Instead of opting for complete demolition, the architects implemented a ‘facelift’ approach. By making selective interventions, the design team preserved elements of the old building while significantly enhancing its appearance. This method involved introducing subtle modifications to give the impression of a complete transformation, while maintaining parts of the original framework. The result is a blend of old and new, where traces of the past can still be appreciated by visitors, offering a layered sensory experience.

The new layout preserves much of the original structure. To minimize costs, Atelier d’More retained the partition walls created by the previous tenant for guest rooms. After studying the circulation and zoning, the team converted two of the three rooms in the front courtyard into a public space, which now includes a lounge, dining area, reception, linen room, and restroom. The three remaining spaces, with their existing steel mezzanine structures, were developed into loft-style family rooms. This reorganization allows for a central public area surrounded by two courtyards, creating distinct zones for guests to enjoy.

atelier d’more creates Two Courtyards for Two Experiences

Atelier d’More shapes two courtyards, each of which play a central role and offer a contrasting experience within Sleeping Lab·Tang. The front courtyard is an open, symmetrical space characterized by white tones and orderly structures, creating a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere. Meanwhile, the rear courtyard is more enclosed, offering privacy and a secluded outdoor area for relaxation. These courtyards are connected by the main hall, where large floor-to-ceiling glass walls allow for an uninterrupted flow of light and views between the two spaces.

The team continues its minimalist approach by minimizing the use of materials and ornamentation throughout the project. A strong emphasis was placed on handmade craftsmanship, with many elements designed digitally and then handcrafted on-site by local craftspeople. This includes both exterior features, such as water spouts and main doors, and interior elements like furniture and bed frames. Prefabricated items were kept to a minimum, with the studio opting to create most pieces on-site to maintain a sense of cohesion and harmony within the design.
