located on the north coast of são paulo, ‘MF house’ has been renovated by the brazilian architecture practice, basiches arquitetos associados. the basic structure and floor plan of the building has been largely retained, however, the client desired the beach residence be reconsidered to create more integration between indoor and outdoor spaces. without any drastic interventions, the project combines old and new, by developing a revised program centred around the existing construction.

the design by basiches arquitetos associados applies the most radical change to the front part of the house. an original tiled roof, which previously covered the garage, has been demolished and a new wall has been built in its place. this intervention acts to form a division between the new garage area and the internal access courtyard. car parking space can now be found under a metal pergola, clad in timber and covered in greenery, and located closer to the street.

the entrance with a view right out to the ocean

upon entering MF house along the new wall, residents are greeted by a large internal garden space which blurs the boundary between the indoors and outdoors. this connection is also enhanced by the application of concrete, which continues from the exterior wall into the dining room. looking across the entrance space, the glazed gym block flanks the courtyard area creating a sense of transparency between spaces. in addition, due to the large glass screens on the elevational treatment at this level, a view can be gained from the entrance all the way out to sea.

the new sauna block and timber-clad portico

with the implementation of a new portico – built in metal and clad in timber – this epic beach panorama is made possible and runs through the entire living space, serving as a frame for the exterior. with this impressive view in the back garden, the existing terrace has been expanded to maximise the space. adjacent to the portico, a new concrete block has been placed to contain a sauna, with a picture window out to sea. a new 25-meter long swimming pool also occupies this part of the residence, bringing a sense of contemporary luxury to the original MF house.
