Adaptive Scaffolding Installation enhances existing courtyard

Bomontiada Temporary Landscape Installation by BARN arch. introduces a scaffolding-based structure integrated with plants in Bomonti, Istanbul. The project aims to create an adaptable space that responds to evolving needs over the next decade while reinforcing the existing courtyard environment. The vertical garden consists of plants repotted into reused wooden pallets, which were systematically placed on different scaffolding levels using forklifts. A custom irrigation system was designed to accommodate the varying heights of the garden.

Functioning as a landscape element during the day, the structure transitions into a performance stage in the evening with the integration of lighting fixtures. RGB LED lights embedded within the scaffolding enable multiple lighting configurations, ranging from subdued, meditative arrangements to dynamic stage lighting. The installation utilizes a modular, detachable scaffolding system designed to be recyclable and minimize site impact. The structural framework is complemented by upcycled materials, including solid fabric emphasizing the tower form and steel mesh that allows filtered sunlight to interact with the space.

BARN arch.’s installation organizes three distinct spatial zones

The arrangement of plants along the facade is based on form and species, aligning with the temporary landscape concept. Bomontiada Temporary Landscape Installation’s newly defined facade by BARN arch. studio generates three distinct spatial zones: a performance stage positioned at one end of the mass, centrally located micro-spaces with two towers designed for short-term collaborations with local and global brands, and an F&B area at the opposite end, intended as a semi-permanent function within the temporary installation. These three zones are articulated through the facade design, clearly defining their volumes and ensuring visibility from various vantage points within the courtyard.
