bangkok project studio, the architecture firm led by boonserm premthada, has built an elevated red walkway as part of a festival in thailand. appropriately titled ‘the walk’, the project has been designed to help people realize the importance of a small plant like grass and to pay attention to the many trivial details that are usually neglected. hovering above the ground below, the walkway comprises eight curved shapes that vary in length from 12 to 15 meters (40-50 feet).

bangkok project studio grouped the different elements together to span a total area of 414 square meters (4,456 square feet). the architects say that, as with other living things, ‘the walk’ will grow and transform organically every year. ‘a journey into a world of nature represents an escape from everyday life, a sharing of experiences, relaxation, freshness of the air, the warmth of the sun, the immersion in the ambiance and memories,’ says the design team.
as to not alter the purity of the natural setting, the architects used thin steel rods (the width of the local napier grass) to support the structure. this scale means that the artwork can blend comfortably with its bucolic surroundings. the direction of the walkway has been configured to align with the existing terrain, offering views from all parts of the design.
‘walking is a natural human movement, like fish swimming in the river or birds flying in the sky,’ the architects continue. ‘the walk is a constant reminder for humans to notice these little things which from now on will no longer be overlooked.’ see other projects by bangkok project studio on designboom here, including an elephant museum built from handmade bricks.
