in the parung district of indonesia, jakarta-based architecture practice bambuso.id  designed and built a new facility for the urban poor consortium (UPC). erected atop stilts to the north of a rural site, the two-story building is surrounded by a pond, orchards, and bamboo groves. the construction uses locally-sourced materials – principally bamboo – to affirm the client’s commitment to self-sufficiency and sustainability.

bambuso.id‘s design carefully considers flooding in the area, which has worsened over the last few years, and the hydrology of parung. the bamboo garden house sits on concrete pedestals, giving it a small footprint that minimizes impact to any surface groundwater.

the use of bamboo and other natural materials effectively combats the warm, humid climate without the need for mechanical air conditioning. two different types of bamboo were used – dendrocalamus asper and gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea – alongside brick in the first floor toilet and clay roof tiles. led by architect andrea fitrianto, bambuso.id provided both design consultancy as well as construction on this project.
