serving to enliven the intersection of la brea and santa monica avenue in west hollywood, california, ball-nogues studio have realized ‘corner glory’ on the primary edge of the recently completed ‘dylan’ apartment building. the permanent installation includes spiked and curving pieces of mirror-polished stainless steel which extend from and outline the glass curtain wall that wraps the building’s edge. the designers intended to create a project which  radiates an impact beyond its physical space, and thus arrived at a visually dynamic form in clear contrast to its host.

the playful structural intervention acts as a gateway for west hollywood. the mirrored surfaces change visually depending on the lighting conditions and viewing angle. rather than producing a direct and clear reflection, the lash-like form creates fuzzy images with an edge that dissolves into its background.

the piece was designed, fabricated, and installed by ball-nogues studio, whom collaborated with structural engineers buro happold. the installation is fully integrated with the building’s structure, a six-story apartment complex comprised of 184 units opening in the summer of 2014.
