the ‘vaugirard’ housing complex, located in the 15th arrondissement of paris, combines student rental living and family ownership town homes into two eight-storey volumes. designed by babled nouvet reynaud architectes, the project is unified and distinguished by its perforated aluminum rainscreen, which wraps the structures to provide shade to balconies and interior spaces. the variations in diameter and patterning of holes on the panels reference foliage motifs, and creates a play of light and shadow across the façades.

each dwelling offers balcony spaces for its occupants. wide patios off of townhomes face a grove of trees at the edge of the site, while more intimate decks face an outdoor passageway, serving the student rental units.

the site layout allows for various flows of pedestrian circulation. numerous entries provide passage through the entire length of the block, as well as initiate a gradual transition from the urban environment to the private units. these basic ground level movements inform the overall outline and orientation of the built volumes.
