an original creation for the MAK museum of vienna, austria, this installation ‘the space of art’ was produced by french firm atelier 37.2. transport crates once used for art from the museums collection of contemporary art are transformed into flexible compact accommodations. previously exhibited artists are integrated into the conception with their names stamped and displayed on the sides of the variously sized wooden crates, ranging in scale to produce a makeshift sofa or bed.

visitors are invited to climb the adjacent stairs and have an impromptu pillow fight or take a nap amongst the packing peanuts and assorted pillows. life is then instilled within the crate’s lapsed purpose and transformed into functional furniture for a pleasant lounge experience.

in regards to the project the micro-architecture specialists state: ‘we like the idea of an installation combining various layers of significations together with a playful and ephemera geography of art (instead of a history). to suggest unlikely encounters between artists, artworks (both invisible) and the public. the space of art is working with the enigma related to each artist and its work.’
