ancient olive tree thrives within renovated traditional residential complex in italy

ev signature places an olive tree in the heart of the project

EV Signature renovates a complex of four trulli and three lamie, blending contemporary elements with the local structures, in San Michele Salentino, Italy. Trulli, known for their conical roofs and dry stone construction, and lamie, recognized for their robust stone build and vaulted ceilings, are both traditional to the region. The design features a modern living room within the original complex, highlighted by a fully transparent space framed in Corten steel. Inside this space, at the heart of the house, an ancient olive tree stands as a symbol of harmony with the natural environment, giving the project its name, Glass Tree. Extensive excavation and landscaping create a spacious courtyard, providing an outdoor space that complements the overall design.

Glass Tree showcases elements of the original structure

EV Signature envelops visitors in the archaic and rustic atmosphere of the interior, where the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces dissolves. Large pivoting windows offer views of the swimming pool, inviting year-round enjoyment. The bathrooms and kitchen boast unique features, with sinks and an island made from locally carved monoliths. The architects choose to showcase local stone on parts of the walls, carefully restored, while other areas are treated with organic lime wash and rustic plaster.
