Kubu Sidem’ hosts A textile design studio and residence

Located in the neighborhood of Payangan, Bali, ‘Kubu Sidem’ expands into layers and accommodates the home of the textile designer Sebas Mesdag, and the indigo painting studio Tian Taru. The project develops two main cabins, the two-floor ‘Joglo’, a traditional vernacular Javanese house, stretching completely open with no doors; and the two-floor workshop where the studio team experiments with indigo plants and painting techniques. The construction follows a ‘spontaneous’ design approach implemented from an ancient Joglo structure imported in pieces from the island of Java. The open layout allows nature to flow inside merging the wooden frame with the rich surrounding vegetation.

multifunctional space expands in a completely open layout

‘Kubu Sidem is conceived as a tent’, shares textile designer Sebas Mesdag of Tian Taru indigo dyeing studio. The workshop utilizes indigo from their own plantation forming around the structure and designs exclusive textile pieces handmade in India collaborating with international artists implementing indigo in the artworks.

The house expands in layers assembling wooden components of the Javanese original structure imported in pieces. The textile designer’s experiences led to the design of a completely open layout. The composition develops an unobstructed flow between the various zones and levels, while no doors separate the areas of the studio and residence. Tian Taru work and living space stands as a multifunctional construction. The upper floor forms a minimal intimate room dedicated to the designer, while the lower level serves as the main workshop where the creation of indigo experimentations and handcrafted objects is held.
