house JC by adolfo mondejar & francisco figueroa astrain

architects adolfo mondejar and francisco figueroa astrain have designed a single story dwelling in the outskirts of córdoba, argentina. called ‘house JC’, the project is shaped by family dynamics as well as ensuring an optimum orientation. the U-shaped floor plan opens out to the east while the south-facing elevation, which also faces the street, is designed to ensure privacy.

one key aspect of mondejar and astrain’s design was to surround the habitable areas with vegetation. house JC is accessed via a private courtyard, which creates a buffer from the street and also integrates a covered carport. from this space, residents can see all the way through to the garden and the social and barbecue area at the end of the site, which has an independent entrance.

the open plan kitchen, dining and living space is contained within the glazed volume of the u-shaped floor plan while the lateral side of the house comprises the five bedrooms. similar to the street-facing elevation, the long bedroom block features movable screens made of aluminum panels, providing privacy and shading when closed; visual and physical connection when open.

the structure of house JC is composed of exposed concrete slabs supported by structural masonry and a double wall of black bricks. the roofs are kept simple, with varying heights to fit different beams, but all built in exposed concrete. with the design of this residential project, adolfo mondejar and francisco figueroa astrain attempt to move away from the typical aesthetics found in this kind of neighborhood, in both scale and image, in a search for a synthesis of its morphologic and chromatic expression.
