althouse designs a leather mill and showroom inside a warehouse near tokyo

japanese design studio althouse has completed an interior design project for creative clan — a company that manufactures leather products for the clothing industry. located inside a warehouse close to tokyo, the new leather mill and showroom marks the second office building of the manufacturer.

creative clan makes many different leather products for various fashion brands in japan and overseas. the company also carries out a range of processes, from the stocking of leather and processing of tanning and dyeing to finishing products. for this project, althouse were commissioned to design an interior that is easy to use as a workplace, while having the function of a showroom to introduce clients to an abundance of leather stocks.

the site is a warehouse with a frontage of 10m and a depth of 20m, positioned adjacent to an existing company building. the shelves on the wall are composed of single metal pipes, with wooden boxes inserted in between for storing leather samples. althouse built this wall of storage in between the existing windows in order to maintain access to natural light, which pours in to create a bright and open space. in a very simple layout, the bogies in blue are lined up to create a unified aesthetic, while an existing room located beside the entrance has been painted in bright red to provide a pop of color and contrast to the blue.
