ukraine-based architect alexander kovpak envisions a dwelling with playful brickwork

with its playful residential renovation proposal, ukraine-based architect alexander kovpak envisions a hybridization of the pre-existing building language with a more functional and contemporary atmosphere. the original dwelling, sited outside kyiv, was built at the end of the last century and integrated into the suburban fabric, characterized by modest brick houses. kovpak and his design team seek to preserve this traditional image, while integrating more functional, design-minded moments — introducing a compact, bright, and modern space for permanent residence.

in organizing its integrated residential renovation, alexander kovpak and his team use the volume of the dwelling to divide the site in two. this strategy introduces an interstitial courtyard zone with enough space for gardening. the proposal seeks to re-purpose dismantled building materials for the new construction, with several cubic meters of bricks slotted for reuse. the team maintains the expression of decorative brickwork elements along the eaves, a typical detail throughout the region, while kovpak notes that such authentic elements must be preserved, restored and emphasized.

alexander kovpak proposed an entirely new layout to expand the functionality of the space. an organization of open, flowing spaces inflates the living area and the boundaries of the interior volumes. full height windows maximize the penetration of natural light, while a sliding skyframe system allows for the transformation of the living room into a continuation of the garden terraces. the functional solution offers an expanded, more flexible use of the site, although the total built area of the building has been reduced by about 30%.
