the flatiron of flatbush, brooklyn's next skyscraper

over that last decade atlantic center has slowly transformed, coming to represent a new brooklyn and the developer’s hopes for the more populated borough. one after another we’ve seen large developments erected in the area from the barclay center in 2012, to various towers that vie with the iconic williamsburg bank building which had dominated the sky unrivaled since 1929.

its newest neighbor is to be a couple; a pair of towers designed by the development firm alloy along with a comprehensive urban renewal project. architecture research office is designing the public schools, while neslon byrd woltz landscape architects is designing the open space. the project puts its emphasis on sustainable development and environmental mindfulness.

the development attempts to fit into the preexisting urban environment 

a large point of emphasis is a proposed 250 million dollar community reinvestment. this would provide funding for new schools and community facilities. the development is also said to be setting aside a large number of ‘affordable’ units, in an attempt to aid the housing crises which the borough and the city have been struggling with. the project aims to maintain the preexisting buildings in the area, which is largely a concern for conservationists and local people who resent many of the rapid changes that have come about. the towers fill in the empty spaces and re-use the older buildings for more modern purposes. subject to approval, construction is set to get underway by 2019, with full completion excepted by 2025.
