3andwich studio based in beijing renovated a landmark ‘shang ping village’ in fujian province, china. using and preserving the pre-existing development, the architects created several multifunctional public spaces suitable for the great flow of tourists coming here every day.

the site comprises different very useful cultural and landscape elements, such as ancient wells and stage ruins, bamboo shoots, and a pond. integrating these treasures in the new design, 3andwich team directed their attention on the unused pigsty and barn, which were the principal objects on the site. the new ‘pigsty bistro’ is now a major building in the area — the architects saved the rabbles façade and wooden roof.

the pigsty was initially divided into four rooms, which now each contains a new bar, a sitting area, and a ‘kang table’, a heatable brick bed. the architects aimed at creating a cozy and dramatic atmosphere inside by adding ‘homely’ interior elements.

right next to the bistro, a small meeting room called ‘orchard conference’ is located. this pavilion is covered with a tiled roof and has a full-height glass window. it provides public services available for all visitors as well as the pigsty.

the old utility room is transformed into ‘lotus chamber’, a teahouse set on the pond. the visitors can go through the pavilion to its platform to observe the site’s sophisticated landscape over the pond.
