the annual RENDER OF THE YEAR award returns with its 2021 winners in five different categories: overall award, young designer award, undergraduate award, interior award, and exterior award. organized by the online platform arch out loud, the competition rounds up, yet again, fascinating renderings of alternative worlds, cities, interiors, and architecture.

overall winner: ‘church in nomine patris’ by tom burkewitz

 

 

exploring dream-like, dystopian, and nostalgic worlds

 

the RENDER OF THE YEAR 2021 ‘overall winner’ award goes to architectural illustrator tom burkewitz. titled ‘church in nomine patris’, his rendering unveils an austere church structure with dark gray facades, sitting in the middle of a grassy field and reaching for an overcast sky. this dream-like and eerie atmosphere finds its way across other winning visuals; among them is witchaya jingjit‘s imaging of an astronaut discovering new land in a dystopian, post-human era. 

 

nostalgic and emotionally charged renderings also take the lead in several categories. ‘remembrance’ by zoe russian moreno, for example, welcomes us into a warmly-lit studio space populated by an array of memorabilia and objects that are all too familiar.

to create such profoundly ambient visuals, arch out loud states that ‘designers must discern the ways people interpret their images. they must work with the feelings that emerge from an image. they must understand how to speak to their audience without words.’
