Tri- Goody is a modular bench made for public spaces. Its unique form allows you to arrange it in many different arrangements in any space given. It can adapt to different places and scenarios.
It is ideal to be placed around trees. Tri-Goody allows you to sit with your friends and enjoy being all together. It seats six people at one go.
The footing of the bench is designed such that it doesn’t require being bolted or casted in the soil. Instead, a thirty centimetre deep pit is dug and the bench is placed inside. In case re-lay outing of space or any change in planning, the bench can simply be dug out and placed on a new location.
The niches cut out in Tri-Goody reduce physical and visual mass. They also allow the users to lock their bicycles with bench. Thus, the users are assured of their belonging and can enjoy in peace.
Tri-Goody is designed in ferrocement, which is an efficient way to use cement and steel. Ferrocement, is a low carbon footprint technique, it uses cement and steel in a highly efficient and cost effective manner. Properly casted, it is more durable than wood and cheaper than steel.
Ferrocement construction does not need heavy plant or machinery but is labour intensive. This aspect works well for India, as we are a developing nation with a large unskilled and underemployed labour force.
Tri-Goody was made as a part of my final graduating project as an undergraduate student in industrial design. The project kicked off with research on public spaces. This was done by visiting various local public spaces like parks and gardens, beaches, streets, market places and many more. Here observations were made on the postures, interaction patterns, usage patterns of the people there through sketches and photographs.
Based on this research ideation was done various public space elements like lighting, seating, tree gaurds etc. And finally a seating that can suit various different public spaces was explored further.
Next lay the challenge in prototyping the product. A system where there was no requirement of a mould was figured out.
As the cost of the product was calculated, it turned out to be quite less. On further analysis, it was observed that the major expense was the labour cost (about 60% of the total). This is a good thing as it points out to the fact that this bench supports human resources while being low on material usage.
On the whole, Tri-Goody is a sustainable solution to public space furniture. It not only is exciting for the end users but also has the potential to support small scale industries and manual labour.
