oharchitecture’s bbq terrace embraces views of osaka bay
Against the backdrop of OHArchitecture’s reflective silver factory in Awaji, Japan, the practice has positioned its new BBQ terrace as an ensemble of pitched steel volumes overlooking Osaka Bay. Following the distinct zig-zag facade of the factory, the terrace is shaped around the concept of ‘three corners and a roof’, posing three wooden peaks of varying heights that each house a BBQ area, washroom facilities, and car wash underneath. This primitive form draws on the lightweight nature of a tent and the roof typology of a pit dwelling to fuse simplicity, functionality, and an artistic finish to allow visitors to embrace the beauty of nature.

a primitive form recalling tents and pit dwellings
The minimalist concept for the BBQ terrace in Awaji arose after the team at OHArchitecture drew inspiration from primitive shelters such as tents and pit dwellings. The result is a delicate structure that evokes the essence of these primitive spaces while providing the functionality required to maximise outdoor enjoyment.
This effect is achieved with simple and elegant construction, by positioning two iron panels at a 45 degree angle to the ground to form each enclosure. These panels not only define the semi-enclosed space with a sculptural character but also serve as its roof. Here, corten steel was used to accentuate the minimalist aesthetic and foster visual harmony with the steel clad factory behind, allowing the structures to age gracefully alongside their surroundings.
