House with four roofs echoes dutch archetypal architecture

Denkkamer design group converts a former car company’s site into House with Four Roofs, a new residential unit located in the countryside of North Brabant, Netherlands. Nestled in the village of Boekel, the structure stands amidst the remnants of an ancient medieval agricultural area enclosed by a grove. The project proposes a unique living space within the rural area setting up a small-scale configuration of four smaller archetypal volumes. The cross-plan layout shapes a central zone and four distinct wings, each boasting its own gabled roof. All formed volumes serve a specific function while establishing a unique connection with the surrounding landscape.

At the heart of the residence lies the intersection, a central room featuring a dining area, and a multimedia corner. This space serves as the entry point, connecting all other areas within the house. The two wings on the west side house arrange the sitting room and kitchen, enveloping an outdoor terrace towards the garden. From the inside, these wings exude openness and transparency, seamlessly merging indoor and outdoor zones through carefully crafted voids that offer views of the tree canopies. The entrance wing contains facilities such as a toilet and carport but also unveils a staircase leading to the leisure room beneath the roof structure. The triangular facade forms large glazed openings facing the landscape. The east wing houses the bathroom, laundry room, and all the bedrooms, ensuring privacy and a sheltered atmosphere.

The design team aims for a monolithic appearance and reinforces the archetypal shape through geometric facade openings. The plinth, roof edge, and upper floor are framed by upright masonry. The slim aluminum frames complement the design’s scale and solid volumes. Coal-sintered extruded brick coats the external surfaces unifying the concepts of abstraction and detailed craftsmanship.
