LAKE House by MAKHNO studio

MAKHNO studio has designed ‘Lake House’, a residential project for a modern family in Ukraine, harmonizing futuristic aesthetics with comfort and functionality. The brief was for an eye-catching structure that ‘wouldn’t leave anyone indifferent’. To achieve this desire, the architects embraced bold shapes and forms, as well as a diverse range of materials and color palettes.

The end result is a visually striking complex of volumes, with expansive glazing interrupting the otherwise strict and rigid silhouette. This clever design ensures a harmonious connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating an immersive and seamless experience. The main structure consists of three distinct blocks, each boasting its own unique shape and size. This deliberate choice adds a sense of dynamism and individuality to the overall design.

balancing between boldness and comfort

The inside of the Lake House was meticulously crafted to evoke a sense of warmth and harmony, achieved through a palette of earthy hues and organic materials. Wood, stone, ceramics, metal, and micro cement harmoniously coexist, seamlessly merging indoor and outdoor elements within the overall scheme. The first level hosts a spacious kitchen, dining room, and a welcoming relaxation area, complete with a large sofa.

A custom-made chandelier, expertly crafted by the studio itself, takes center stage in the foyer, with its futuristic forms artfully enhancing the room’s ambiance. ‘While the walls of the space have been enriched with our state-of-the-art 3D tile solutions, our award-winning TETRAPOD tiles stand out as a hallmark of the MAKHNO Studio’s commitment to exceptional design,’ explained the studio. With this gesture, the architects sought to introduce a compelling sense of depth and dimensionality.

The bathroom exudes a feel of sophistication reminiscent of the pristine elegance of white rock formations. ‘The bespoke KHMARA lamp in the office exemplifies the creativity and ingenuity of our studio’s designers,’ they added. This lamp also provides purposeful illumination, specifically designed to improve mental clarity and focus. It seamlessly combines functionality with aesthetic appeal, embodying the studio’s dedication to delivering design solutions that transcend conventional standards.

embodying a different aspect of the lunar landscape

The second floor comprises two bedrooms, ‘each representing a distinct facet of the lunar landscape’. One of the bedrooms features a light and airy ambiance, while the other oozes a darker and more atmospheric feel. In the bright bedroom, the Gemma ceramic lamp, an exquisite lighting fixture meticulously crafted by Serhii Makhno, becomes the protagonist. This lamp emanates a soft, warm glow, diffusing throughout the room, thanks to its tapered design.

Adjacent to the bed, the iconic art toy, Dido, takes place, adding a touch of artistic flair. The design of the dressing room closely mirrors that of the bedroom, with SCREE volumetric tiles adorning one of the walls. These ceramic tiles mimic the gentle waves of water or sand, creating a stunning visual effect as they seemingly ebb and flow across the surface. Illuminating the room is the Lakuna lamp, working in harmony with the SCREE tiles to establish a mysterious yet cozy atmosphere.

In contrast, the other bedroom embraces darker hues, providing a serene shelter for calmness and relaxation. The atmosphere here evokes a sense of being on the dark side of the moon, shielded from everyday concerns. Contributing to this ambiance is the Volcano lamp, casting a soft, lava-like glow that bathes the space in soothing warmth once night falls. Additional lighting integrated into the walls acts as a horizon line, offering a distinctive way to divide the room when desired.

the goal was for a structure that is noticeable and bold

The landscape design encompasses a futuristic garden that harmoniously merges natural and artificial elements, incorporating stones and plants. This approach not only highlights the contemporary character of the building but also creates a captivating illusion of an otherworldly wild meadow, according to the architects.

‘Upon viewing our home from above, one may be under the impression that it comprises circular satellites,’ described MAKHNO Studio. However, these are actually designated areas for relaxation and barbecuing, where families can gather around a cozy fire pit after enjoying a delightful meal. Adding to the ambiance are the KHMARA lamps, visible through the windows of the second floor. These lamps transform the ceiling into a starry night sky, ‘without the risks associated with inclement weather.’
