bolzan’s jack bed collection is revived

The serenity in the bedroom is fabricated by Zanellato/Bortotto’s reinterpretation of their 2017 Jack bed for Bolzan. Wanting to create a timeless object that could last as long as possible, the designers chose to revive the original model that realizes artisan excellence. With the use of eco-friendly fabrics, certified GMO-free leather, and verified wood from reforestation, the upgraded version makes also part of the benefit company’s sustainability path.

Bolzan was born in the early 90s as a family business with headquarters in Venice. The Italian benefit company has since then been committing to the union between craftsmanship and industrial accuracy, with a continuous research for materials and the ‘know-how’ of the local culture. The dimension that the brand has achieved has led to collaborations with renowned designers and its products reaching the international market, one of them being the Jack bed by Zanellato/Bortotto. The creative duo reinterprets their first collection with a sustainable philosophy and high-end artisan knowledge.

A simple and minimal design is at the origin of the bed. Its structure, originally in painted metal but upgraded to wood, is composed of two sides where the tubes of the headboard and footboard are inserted. Like two rollers, they welcome the upholstery, in fabric or leather, fixing it, while the tubes can be customized in size to obtain the desired width: from the French dimension to the king size bed or custom-made. A bench and a coffee table complete the collection and harmonious setting of the bedroom.

ash-certified wood frames the bed

The wood used for the structure of the Jack collection is actually certified ash from reforestation. On this basis, Loris Giacomin of LorisTill (see here) applied totally natural paints using grinded soil and stones and dissolving them in boiling water to form the color. This means interpreting an ancient tradition, which passes entirely through the hands of the craftsman where the paint is applied by spray, with a brush or a rag.

For Bolzan, designers Giorgia Zanellato and Daniele Bortotto were looking for an eco-sustainable and refined fabric, capable of enhancing the pattern they wanted to impress on it. The idea was to create an evocation of the intertwining of willows, typical of the Sacile landscape and of the territory between Veneto and Friuli where the company is based. These characteristics were found in the natural yarns of Torri Lana (read more), which are used for the headboard and footboard of Jack. For the padding, a so-called pre-consumer cotton was used, characterized by a short yarn that is generally discarded because it is not suitable for production.

The plot is made of hemp, a plant growing with little water, the only one capable of reclaiming a land of heavy metals, prerogatives that make it a vegetable element with a strong symbolic value. For the warp, Torri Lana came up with an American cotton with a slub effect, woven with a double beam jacquard loom, which makes it very resistant. The merge of the two materials has given life to a three-dimensional, vibrant, deep texture.

The leathers used by the Presot tannery (read more) are all of European origin and come from farms that comply with the rules on animal welfare and are certified GMO-free. The skins are subjected to a long manufacturing process, where the backs are immersed in a solution of water and tannins, and vegetable powders that penetrate the skin and stiffen it without resorting to chemical elements.
