‘Green water village’ takes first place at arch out loud

The winning proposal for Arch Out Loud’s Miami Floating House competition, Gabriele Filippi Architetto’s ‘Green Water Village’ is a cluster of biophilic islands connecting Miami’s coastal Legion Park with its Picnic Island. Emerging along the coastline as a series of surreal floating residential areas, the village presents a surreal, sustainable housing alternative for an imagined future where rising ocean levels have forced humans to migrate to floating districts.

Each island of the fictional ‘Green Water Village’, built upon empty caissons technology, comprises a series of identical hexagonal polygon habitats engulfed in greenery and integrated with renewable energy systems. Juxtaposed with one another, they form an irregular and organic network in the ocean.

Gabriele Filippi plans sustainable living in the ocean

Gabriele Filippi Architetto conceives the conceptual proposal in response to Arch Out Loud’s 2022 competition which called for creators to design futuristic floating housing options in Miami in response to the effects of climate change. ‘The level of the oceans causes the migration of citizens to new floating districts: new residences, new spaces, and new habits. We must resist,’ comments the team.

The artificial islands of ‘Green Water Village’ each house a prefabricated house in metal, wood, and glass, on one level or on two floors depending on the type of dwelling. Each habitat takes shape as a glass and metal cage with irregular shapes that host living environments, serene gardens, and communal meeting spaces. Enriched and characterized by spatial relationships dominated by the theme of greenery, the structures open different paths and views toward the interior spaces and towards Miami bay. An aggregation of the island houseboats also creates small ports, while a continuous and sinuous wooden path connects all the units.

Further, enhancing the sustainability of the habitats, new technologies for capturing rainwater and humidity characterize have been integrated into the volumes, meanwhile wind turbines and masts are positioned on their tops for renewable energy generation.
