‘Kanso’ Hostel develops through minimal & sustainable principles

Multidisciplinary studio Stone Designs takes over the interior development of a hostel located in the center of Madrid. Drawing from the Japanese ‘Kanso’ concept, meaning the elimination of the superfluous, the project develops in a simple and natural way committing to sustainable methods of architectural expression. Framing spaces for collective living and sharing, the team opts for a spatial design outcome that would allow users to create their own experiences in the city, whether they prefer group interactions or private moments. Balancing the focus both on the individual and the community, the structure forms following the principles of simplicity and sustainability. In the process of eliminating the excess, the team selects a minimum number of materials seeking the traceability of each one of them throughout the construction of the hostel.

Raw & simple materiality adorns the interior space of the hostel

The hostel’s interior arrangement stands simple yet modern, following Japanese design principles, such as ‘Kanso’ and ‘Wabi-Sabi’. The Madrid-based studio attends to the virtue of rawness and simplicity through the spatial distribution of the interior, and the selected materiality applied throughout. The structure sets up a minimal collection of textures that maintain a balanced image, conveying different susceptibilities to stimulate the senses. The main sleeping areas form bunk beds hiding within cubicles made out of panels of oak wood. The cafeteria’s common area assembles various types of tables and different seats available for social gatherings. The fundamental wooden finishes are topped off with details of stainless steel and green marble. In the lounge zone, a large curtain covers the entire wall which in addition to providing excellent acoustics, serves as a backdrop to frame the small seating area. Several coral-colored spots and details, in contrast to the oak, raise the green of the walls and upholstery.
