sustainable house in thailand regulates tropical climate living

Nong Ho 17 House by Skarn Chaiyawat Architects follows an environmental design approach through sustainable architectural methods attending to the tropical climate of Chiang Mai. Located on the foot of the mountain, the residence overlooks the scenic landscape stretching from north to south across the plot. Sensitive to the surrounding ecological factors, the project embraces the local climatic conditions using reclaimed materials and suitable construction methods for simple design solutions.

A rich selection of natural materials is subtly added to harmonize the house with the cool breeze, natural light, and the surrounding nature. An extended gable roof covers the two-leveled residence, while local bamboo louvers run along the exterior openings to prevent sunlight and rain. Every room orients its openings towards the outdoors, freely overlooking the landscape. A private garden and swimming pool are sited on the west, and a small open garden takes over the east side of the plot.

Regarding the interior layout, the residence arranges an open living space on the first floor dedicated to common functions, as well as a pantry area and a guest room. All the living areas of the house benefit from cross ventilation to reduce the use of air-conditioning during the daytime. The private zones of the house are assembled on the second floor planning two bedrooms on each side connected by an open-air living area in the middle. Locally sourced materials applied both on the exterior and the interior structure are one of the essential elements of the design by Skarn Chaiyawat Architects. The floor and roof tiling displays ceramic materials provided by local artisans, while the reclaimed teaks decorating the structure are collected from an abandoned house in the area. To protect the house from exposure to sunlight, bamboo louvers leave out a delicate aperture to the surrounding view while reducing the heat and letting in gentle breezes along the east and west facade of the house. ‘Nong Ho 17 House’ merges seamlessly with Chiang Mai’s natural landscape introducing minimal environmental impact.
