Honeyman and Smith expands a single fronted weatherboard cottage nestled in a dense residential area in Victoria, Australia, with a sleek two-story extension. Tucked between a bluestone laneway and a busy road, within a compact streetscape lined with workers’ homes, the ‘Cooperative’ residence elevates the neighborhood with a new accoya wood clad facade. The new frontage simultaneously refreshes the image of the home while melding discreetly with the encompassing traditional cottages. Inside, the architects renovate the existing internal arrangement to generate a more optimal program with mirrored circulation that allows for openness and privacy for its residents.

sleek accoya enlivens old cottage-lined victoria streetscape 

With their regenerative intervention, architecture studio Honeyman and Smith articulates an extension that elongates and condenses the cottage’s openings, abutments, and corners. The new minimalist wood clad elevation of ‘Cooperative’ centers on proportion and scale to create an architectural solution that at the same time enhances the public realm with an attractive design, complements the neighboring context of small weatherboard cottages, and creates a comfortable living environment inside.

Focusing on harnessing the existing boundary conditions, the architects extend the home vertically and incorporate deeply recessed windows, providing both protection from the elements to the structure, and ensuring privacy for its inhabitants. Further, the project restores a sense of order to the disjointed urban context which has accumulated inconsistent additions over the years, with a minimal and sleek facade.

an enhanced vertical program

Stepping inside, over half of the existing interior was demolished to open up further space and introduce a new program. On the ground floor, Honeyman and Smith lay out the lounge, laundry, and kitchen, while the new first floor holds two bedrooms and a bathroom. The remainder of the original structure was renovated to integrate a new master bedroom with an ensuite, and a new powder room along the hallway.

The new circulation proposal mirrors the plan, relocating the hallway to the east boundary wall and opening up space to reposition the master bedroom from what was once the front music room — effectively generating two private rooms rather than one. The new luminous kitchen is positioned adjacent to the cottage’s rear boundary, opening out directly onto the edible garden. Its positioning protects the lounge from the bright north facing sun, creating a more comfortable environment for more secluded activities.
