‘atmosphere’ spa shapes Curved formation in the austrian terrain

Hadi Teherani Architects expanded the 5-star Krallerhof hotel with the new ‘Atmosphere’ spa and wellness center in the Austrian Alps. Run by the Altenberger family, the recreational facility added to the complex near the area of Leogang blends with the mountain landscape. The new design shapes a curved split-roof structure that arches over 100 m and merges into the green surroundings, an underground connection to the main hotel that is punctuated midway by a circular sunken courtyard, and a 5.500 sqm natural lake as the centerpiece of the site. Located on a sloping plot, the smooth formation of the spa resort seamlessly fuses with the scenic view from the hotel while adding a curved organic element to the alpine terrain.

The overall space in the new building is organized based on split floor-plan typology. Both levels are covered by the main arched roof exhibiting a 4 m variation in height. A descending glass facade connects the main volume to the outdoor terrace and the promenade forming around the lake. The high glass opening generates panoramic views of the mountainous scenery and unifies the interior to the exterior space. The linear swimming pool is nestled in the natural lake for intimate communication with the environment.

The ground floor hosts various saunas, locker rooms, and a relaxation area with split platforms oriented eastwards overlooking the valley. A Finnish sauna of a 21 m long area and 4 m height is featured, formed in a wooden structure with openings to the facade. The construction adds a smooth sculptural volume to the interior. A lamella ceiling runs cohesively through the interior, beginning from the connecting corridor and along 175 m to the end of the main roof. Locally produced materials were chosen by the architects to preserve the sense of resource conservation and short production routes. Wood and glass were used to accompany the exposed concrete walls with vertical boarding, as well as custom furniture made out of alpine marble from the immediate vicinity.
