lago/algo cultural hub opens its doors in mexico

Lago/Algo is the most recent cultural addition in the heart of the Bosque de Chapultepec, the green lung of Mexico City and largest urban park worldwide. Managed by OMR Gallery and Corporacion Mexicana de Restaurantes (CMR), and with Jérôme Sans as its artistic director, the project was inaugurated in spring 2022, bringing together the worlds of music, contemporary art, architecture, nature, and gastronomy. The new destination reactivates a pre-existing modernist building from 1964, hoping to bring art back to the area. This latest gallery features unique works that can be viewed in juxtaposition to the beautiful vistas of Lake Chapultepec, making for a special experience.

vibrant laboratory housed in emblematic modernist building

The project involves the renovation of an emblematic modernist structure that was initially designed by Leónides Guadarrama and Alfonso Ramírez Ponce in 1964 and later renovated by Javier Sordo Madaleno in 1998. The most recent refurbishment was handled by Mexican architecture firm Naso (see more here), whose design returns the building to its original glory and highlights it as an immersive cultural destination.

The hub is composed of two parts: a sustainable restaurant and an all-access artistic zone. ‘Lago’ is a farm-to-table restaurant that also integrates a workspace and a cafe. Its open configuration and shared table arrangement encourage seamless circulation and social interaction between guests. The exhibition space presents itself as ‘Algo’, unrolling a fluid, dynamic, and perpetually shifting programmation accessible day and night. It is an independent cultural area run by OMR Gallery that aims to inspire observations on contemporaneity and our place in the future of the planet through culture and the arts.
