new sports facility in Malaysia

Archicentre Sdn Bhd has completed a new sports facility in Malaysia. The resulting structure is clad in a light brick surface, with a distinctive origami-folded roof marking its presence. Its sculptural form contrasts with the natural environment in the background without, though, overshadowing it.

The irregular roof is visible from the inside as well, adding to the character of the interior. Upon entering the building, one encounters a transparent entry space, with a series of diamond-shaped openings penetrating the ceiling.

serving both for sports activities and social events

The ‘Estuari sports centre’ by Archicentre Sdn Bhd (see more here) spans two levels, including both indoor and outdoor facilities. The program consists of a private club for get-together activities for the local community, a swimming pool, martial arts studio, multipurpose room, gym and yoga room, sauna, and more.

In more detail, the outdoor facilities include the FINA-compliant swimming pool and tennis courts for international tournaments such as the ATP Malaysian Open & SUKMA Johor. In addition to that, the property can occasionally cater for social events such as conferences, exhibitions, and weddings.

materiality and construction

The North and West facades are designed with massive folded louvered walls letting the wind flow through and reflecting views of the central park from the main entrance. In contrast, the East and South elevations are blind and oriented respectively towards a sloping green area and the lake view.

The large cantilevered roof overhangs the louvres wrapped over clay brick walls. The perforated walls are lined with bricks in different directions to protect and shade the interior from the elements. It also shields the main hall from direct sun during midday, in order to reduce the cost of ventilation and cooling.
