A-mazing, an installation that changes over the time

Lacoste+Stevenson has designed ‘A-mazing’, a sustainable temporary installation for the National Gallery of Victoria. Taking shape as a giant QR code maze, the project forms an unexpected backdrop for NVG’S collection of garden sculptures. Thus, as the visitors meander through the pavilion, they will encounter artworks of the prized collection, including a QR code that can be read digitally.

The artwork is made of hay bales that will sprout native grasses as time passes. With this materiality, the design team sought to emphasize the temporariness of the installation that entails the transitory forces of nature. ‘make hay while the sun shines’ says the Australia-based creative practice.

hide-and-seek with NVG’s sculpture collection

On the occasion of the two-stage architectural competition for a pavilion in the Grollo garden of the Museum organized by NGV (see more here), Lacoste+Stevenson (see more here) has designed a maze resembling an oversized QR code. At a junction of artificial and natural, the maze’s limits fade with the golden hay bales covering by a field of grasses.

The proposal is completely biodegradable. This means that the structure will return to earth with zero impact on its landscape. Apart from an eco-conscious approach, ‘A-mazing’ offers a carefree nod to the guests, enabling a game of hide-and-seek with NVG’s sculpture collection. In its entirety, the project offers a multidimensional experience, activating visitors’ senses. Upon entering the Grollo Equiset garden, the scent of hay is noticeable, while the play within the QR code weaves the visitor around the collection experientially and digitally.
