cooperative housing in tokyo

in tokyo‘s setagaya city, furuya design completes its hanegi + residences. the project is completed in what the team describes as a rare location that combines the convenience of being within walking distance of meidaimae station, known also as semi central station, with the environmental friendliness of a residential area. the interiors of the japanese project reflect the angular shape of the volume, which has been intentionally shaped into this specific volume to ensure the required cost performance of a cooperative-housing project.

furuya design’s floating dwellings

the architects at furuya design integrates a ‘dry area’ into the façade of its hanegi + residence which serves to brings light to the basement and a one-sided roof full of legal restrictions lines that floats gently above the level of the street, which the team likens to ‘large feathers.’ the tip of the retaining wall that recedes from the site boundary line is squeezed to bring green to the dry area, and the feather-shaped façade and all the green are integrated to connect the cityscape and the plantation in the depth direction.

integrated greenery

organizing the layout of its hanegi + houses, furuya design integrates entrances into the façade which approach the common corridors on the first and second floors. which this layout lends a floor plan described as a ‘maisonette-type’ dwelling unit. in order to secure as much green as possible between each entrance, the three flow lines are all planted, including the evacuation stairs approach to the underground dry area, and the combination of these green spaces makes the relationship between the town and the building borderless.
