as the planet faces an abnormal human-made crisis, the design of singapore 2100 proposes urgent actions; ways to change our existing cities, and mobility infrastructure based on plans, innovations, and technologies that are already available.

the future of living, from mono-use to multi-use

in the future, dedicated areas for working, playing, or living will be replaced by multi-functional spaces. ‘our work and schooling is not solely deskbound. where we work from, is flexible and our workplaces are adaptable’. the new city example provides facilities that inspire citizens to stay active and spend time in nature, yet quality time with their close people at home.

50/50 city and the future mobility

50/50 city will reserve half of its footprint for nature and the other half for urban spaces. this will create a balance between natural and artificial systems. it will heal and revive climatic and ecological systems enabling biodiversity to flourish.

the future of mobility suggests public means of transportations, reducing the use of private vehicles. pedestrians, bikes, and mobile electric carriers will take over the green pathways. at the same time, the highways and other urban connections will move to lower underground levels. ‘we can navigate the city 3-dimensionally: above ground, underground, and through the skies’. nature will breathe and respond, giving back cleaner air, water, and cooler temperatures.

changing from 2D urban planning to innovative integrated 3D planning, spares time, space, power, and emissions while improving people’s lives. this means that the city is developed horizontally and vertically with multiple levels spanning from the ground to the sky — the services and logistics are on a subterranean layer, then retail, community, and nature zones on the near-ground levels, living and working parts in the middle, and drones and energy layers above.
