continuing the same mission as previous editions, the LEXUS DESIGN AWARD 2022 seeks proposals that most effectively embody the LEXUS brand’s three key principles: anticipate, innovate and captivate. for example, entries are expected to anticipate global challenges facing future society and suggest engaging, innovative ways to contribute to a sustainable tomorrow. at the same time, designs should look to seamlessly enhance happiness.

LEXUS reveals prestigious judging panel and mentors

LEXUS’ design competition is renowned for its esteemed judging panel and diverse mentors; it is what makes the platform so unique. finalists receive once-in-a-lifetime experiences in the mentorship program. here, the young creators are given direct access to elite working professionals in the design world who guide them in exploring potential solutions and finalizing prototypes (with a budget up to 3 million JPY / $25,000 USD per design) and presentations for final submissions. from top tips from experts to supportive feedback, the mentorship program is always the most praised and considered most valuable by former participants. for 2022, mentors include sam baron, design and creative director of sam baron & co; joe doucet, founder of doucet x partners; yosuke hayano, principal partner of MAD architects; and sabine marcelis, designer and founder of studio sabine marcelis.

‘it is my great honor to participate as a mentor for a third year in the LEXUS DESIGN AWARD. the mentorship segments of the program is the key differentiator in what makes these awards so unique. the opportunity to work with the young and visionary finalists in helping them refine and realize their projects has been a highlight for me, as I feel I learn as much as I teach. I can’t wait to get started on this year’s program as we look to design to lead the way to a better future,’ explains joe doucet.

six finalists are selected from global entries in early 2022 by an equally as esteemed judging panel. the four distinguished members then also review the finalists’ presentations and select the grand prix in spring 2022. the judges this year include renowned, diverse names in the creative field: paola antonelli, senior curator, department of architecture and design, MoMA, new york; anupama jundoo, architect and founder of anupama kundoo architects, bruce mau, co-founder and CEO of massive change network; and simon humphries, head of toyota and LEXUS global design.

‘this difficult year has proven once again that design is a fundamental force in the world, providing solutions, motivation, and imagination that can help people, institutions, and society overcome hardship and build a better future. it is a privilege to be part of the jury of these awards, which promote the most constructive and innovative forms of design, and which support young designers in the realization of their visions,’ adds paola antonelli.
