local stone + bare aluminum pipes complete siin siin's retail interior in japan

siin siin designed ‘fudge up nothing’ interior, a clothing store in kanazawa, japan, including furniture’s design, utilizing local materials. the designer sought to choose familiar materials from this region in an attempt to provide a new perspective to them; local stone, wood, and aluminum complete the interior of the store, while the ceiling is maintained exposed.all images courtesy of yukihito kono

for the design, siin siin used more than two tons of nikka stone from a former quarry in komatsu city, about 30 kilometers from the store’s site. in collaboration with nakajima-san, a stonemason and friend, the designer worked on this material, preserving some of the stones’ original skin. furthermore, closing racks formed by nikka stone, and bare aluminum pipes decore the interior and generate a balance between them.

the store is vaguely divided into retail and office areas, with a curtain divider made of fabric printed with photographs. the counter and bench were constructed of noto-hiba wood that has been chainsaw-carved on the surface and then was dyed with a mixture of pine soot and persimmon tannin. the result takes shape as a solid object with a rough, wavy texture that gives off a dull black finish.
