the newest zerocabin inspires visitors to live simply and use zero fossil fuels

after first introducing its kit of off-grid cabins at the beginning of 2020, zerocabin presents its newest iteration, the zerocabin krul. the chile-based design-build team realizes this cabin model as a 100% self sustaining dwelling. the construction operates without any external active systems providing light, water, or sewage. instead the tiny house is built and oriented with complete precision to get the most out of its natural context. covering a footprint of only 85 square meters (915 square feet) and is subtly elevated atop a timber platform to minimize its impact on the site.

the latest ‘krul’ iteration of the zerocabin is developed to perform entirely with the use of passive systems. with its orientation on the site, the interior receives natural sunlight and is warmed during the winter. meanwhile, precise openings invite passive ventilation to maintain a breezy and comfortable interior condition during the heat of the summer. even the evacuation of served water is naturally treated through a worm-based lombrifiltro system, replicating a natural ecosystem. the cabins are designed and built by the zerocabin team, and are available for purchase as a pre-designed kit, meant to be sited anywhere.

zerocabin krul prioritizes its functional relationship with its environment over its formal design or aesthetic style. while the house eliminates the need for fossil fuels, external services, and bills, zerocabin ultimately seeks to change the habits of its occupants. the design team comments: ‘it is not about ‘what happens if the water scarce,’ the questions these days should be ‘if the waters scarce, are my habits according to the water available in the place where I live? if the sun energy is not enough, are my consumption habits according to the energy available?’
