DUTS design completes oval olympic sports center stadium in linxia city, china

located in the core area of linxia city, in china, DUTS design has completed an olympic sports center stadium, serving as one of the landmark cultural facilities of the area. including an auditorium and international stadium, the structure functions as a large-scale sports facility, ensuring the fitness and entertainment of the local community. the auditorium’s exterior contour takes shape as an elliptical plane, adding a better visual quality.all images courtesy of wu qingshan

the design draws reference by linxia hezhou’s characteristics such as the peony, painted pottery, and color decoration. the project adopts the peony petal structure system whose outer construction appears as a thin shell space. the shape is influenced by the arc of painted pottery, striving to integrate the internal functional layout closely.

‘we have designed a unified body with reasonable long-span structure and applicable space in order to embody the beauty of structure and logic so that the economy and comfort of large space can be realized,’ mentions DUTS design.

in order to ensure a pleasant aesthetic, the main truss adopts a uniform cross-section. this way, it entirely fits the building’s arc so the spectators can enjoy the events and appreciate the unique view of the structure. the maximum cantilever of the stadium canopy is up to 48 meters and utilizes the steel truss structure design, where triangular steel pipe support is positioned.

the stadium features different entrances & exits for pedestrians and vehicles, for visitors, VIPs, athletes & media reporters, as well as emergency circumstances located on each side. in terms of the layout function, the central gate is set on the east side of the stadium, and the concentrated green space is arranged at the northeast and southeast side, combined with the outdoor sports ground and parking area.

the rostrum is located in the west side of the central part, attempting to form a good sense of depth. the west zone’s ground floor includes rooms for athletes and referees, organizing committee and journalists. at the same time, the east part is equipped with office rooms and commercial housing for external development. the second floor on the west part is mainly a rest platform for the audience, while the area below houses toilets, service rooms, equipment, and other facilities.
