spanish architecture firm BONBA studio has completed the refurbishment of a detached family home, that was originally built in the 1950s within the province of font d’en fargues, in barcelona, spain. apart from the renovation, the project incorporates a lightweight metal mesh structure as an extension to accommodate the needs of the residents. the design generates an environment where two totally different languages coexist, without losing balance or harmony.

since the plot is arranged in different staggered levels, the refurbishment turned out to be quite complex. therefore, BONBA studio decided to organize all living spaces as follows: the first level allocates the access to the dwelling from the street, as well as the parking and storage rooms. the next floor is where the main entrance is placed, allowing users to approach the house through a staircase, situated on the right side of the main facade. finally, a third level houses the bedrooms and at the end of the plot, the swimming pool.

upon entering, residents find the entrance hall, which gives access to an open kitchen and dining area, as well as access to the second floor via a custom staircase. these stairs take shape as a light structure, allowing a glimpse of the entire space which includes the living room, kitchen, and garden.

the extension was built on the south side of the house, emerging as a structure with a totally different style. while the old house is finished with white plaster, the new building is covered by a metal structure made of white lacquered mesh to provide a sense of lightness. in this way, the addition does not only generate a new living space, but also a new visual dimension that elevates the whole look of the house.

on the ground floor, the newly added metal mesh opens up to give access to the open kitchen & dining area from the outside. meanwhile, on the first level, the structure covers the extension which hosts the main bedroom, an en-suite bathroom, and a terrace, providing privacy while offering views over the garden and swimming pool.
