london-based design and architectural practice JaK studio has revealed plans for customizable, modular cabins that can be used for leisure or remote working. inspired by the video game series minecraft, the project — titled ‘home office module cubed’ (HOM3) — can be customized to create spaces from offices and gyms to music studios or even a glamping pod. with remote working becoming prevalent as a result of the ongoing pandemic, the cabins provide users with valuable extra space at a time when it is most needed.

JaK studio explains that HOM3 is flexible enough to fit into a city terrace, suburban garden, or a country field, enabling individuals to create a range of spaces that are entirely customizable. owners can configure the size and shape to their specific needs and tailor the fittings, furniture, or finish. meanwhile, sleep pods can be paired with workstations to create spaces from home offices and gyms, to music studios or even a children’s tree house. the structure can also be mounted onto a trailer and taken on holiday.

‘there has been a growing trend in recent years for garden sheds and outhouses that can be used flexibly as work or leisure spaces, and the pandemic has only accelerated this,’ says jacob low, director of JaK studio. ‘during lockdown, our team became fascinated by the principles of games such as minecraft which allow people to transform and customize their environments, and we began experimenting with the idea of customizable, modular micro-architecture. HOM3 transports what we found in the gaming world to the physical space, offering a really unique design solution for modern living.’

intended to be simple to design and easy to install, each module is made using 100% sustainable materials sourced from the forests of bosnia. every purchase includes a contribution to offset its environmental impact and each module can be added, removed, or repurposed, cutting down waste. while each module is currently designed by the JaK studio team, the firm is working with game designers AI interactive to develop an interactive platform — set to be launched in summer 2021 — that will allow individuals to design their own unit.

‘being a gamer myself, I have watched my friends build endless houses and buildings within minecraft,’ says nedzad sahovic, creative director of JaK studio. ‘during lockdown downtime, it dawned on me that this way of creating virtual architecture could be a great way for people to build truly flexible and adaptable pieces of micro-architecture for themselves.’

JaK studio adds that the sale of each unit guarantees a financial payment to the arts, or environmental or social causes. buyers can choose that between 1-3% of each sale be donated directly to support the charity of their choice — which includes youthbuild and key changes. JaK studio intends to create a limited edition batch of 12 modules this year, with two scheduled to be installed in spring 2021. the firm are currently accepting briefs via the project’s website for an additional 10 modules varying in scale and ambition.
