sou fujimoto has announced that he and his firm are involved in the design of the ‘Torch Tower’ in tokyo, a 390 meter (1,280 feet) skyscraper that is set to become japan’s tallest building. the project forms part of a wider development known as ‘TOKYO TORCH’, a masterplan that will include another high-rise structure (the ‘Tokiwabashi Tower’) and will be directly connected to the city’s ōtemachi subway stop, right next to tokyo station.

developed by Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd. [executor of class 1 urban area redevelopment project in otemachi 2 – chome tokiwabashi district], the ‘TOKYO TORCH’ development integrates active pedestrian areas at its lower levels with the two towers containing a range of functions such as offices, commercial and retail outlets, a hotel, and an observation deck. as its name suggests, the ‘Torch Tower’ is inspired by a flaming torch with the crown of the skyscraper designed by sou fujimoto architects and Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei, Inc.

here, at a height of approximately 300 meters (984 feet), a large semi-outdoor plaza serves as an accessible observation deck overlooking the city below. according to sou fujimoto — who revealed the design on instagram — instead of being designed as an object, the space will be designed as a ‘place for people’. the ‘Tokiwabashi Tower’ is scheduled to complete in 2021, with the ‘Torch Tower’ set to open in 2028 as japan’s tallest building. read more about the project here.
