pedevilla + willeit architektur shape service building like a mountain peak in the dolomites

located in the sexten dolomites in south tyrol, italy, the service building kreuzbergpass by pedevilla architects and willeit architektur takes the form of a mountain peak or pinnacle, as a reference to the surrounding landscape formations. the main purpose of the new building is to accommodate various service functions, provide information on the network of hiking trails and huts of the ‘dolomites UNESCO world heritage site’ area, and offer shelter from rain and snow. the steep and high gable roof transform the structure  into a landmark for the area, while the low canopy reduces its external appearance and underlines its function as a service building.all images by gustav willeit

the new building by pedevilla architects and willeit architektur is part of the nature park administration’s plan for a series of distinctive structures built at strategically important locations throughout the ‘dolomites UNESCO world heritage site’ area. the project is located in kreuzbergpass, the easternmost entrance gate to the nature park and an important starting point for numerous hiking tours and other leisure activities in the mountains. in the form of a mountain peak or pinnacle, the building makes a direct reference to the surrounding landscape formations.

the outer shell of the building is made of exposed white concrete from local dolomite rock. the concrete is combined with hand-chopped larch wood, which can be found in most of the interior. amber-colored, solid glass details reminiscent of the sap of larch trees complete the material palette. the combination of materials and the craftsmanship convey the feeling of safety and quality even in a rough, isolated place like this.
