virgil abloh unveils a hammered 100% recycled plastic water bottle for evian

evian natural mineral water has unveiled a new bottle designed by its creative advisor for sustainable innovation design, virgil abloh. made from 100% recycled plastic — also known as rPET — the bottle is fully recyclable and features a hammered design effect, in which the indentation marks are suggestive of the previous life of the bottle.

evian is a brand that has always been committed to preserving nature. following its sustainability achievements in 2020, the brand is on track to becoming circular by 2025, meaning that all of its plastic bottles will be made from 100% recycled materials.

‘it was a real challenge to take on the redesign of the evian bottle; an image which is so commonplace in our culture. I wanted to create a shape that was as iconic as the evian brand, whilst representing how the product has been reinvented using old bottles,’ says virgil abloh, creative advisor for sustainable innovation design for evian. ‘my new hammer motif reflects how this new design has been reconstructed from waste materials, which in itself was a whole new challenge, and a new step in my partnership with evian. It is now more important than ever to practice sustainability; I believe we all have the power to challenge the status quo and to change our future for the better.’

earlier this year, abloh launched the ‘post modern scholarship fund’. endowed with financial contributions from abloh and further donations from evian and other partners, the $1 million USD fund was created to help finance scholarships for students with academic promise of Black, African American or African descent.
