The Flying Pen

The Flying Pen by jarno koole from finland

designer's own words:

while sketching away stuff, i realised that i'm in an autopilot mode. pen in my hand and a moleskine on my lap, i was whole again. i felt happy, knowing that everything is possible and everything is unique and beautiful.

i started the project thinking about a pen -could it itself be an approachable idea for a design? then i just realised, that i've never drawn a pen before :D.. really. what kind of pen should i draw anyway? looking at my drawing tools i saw the tiniest pencil. this very pencil had seen a lot of life, i thought. it had distinct charm that no other pen around had. "i choose you, my old friend" -i said in my mind, and fired up illustrator.

then after about 1 tries, i nailed it. the first prototype was ready. it was neat and funny looking, but it certainly lacked symbolic meaning. after 1 seconds of thinking.. the first thing came to my mind was wings. that would represent freedom and the feeling of flow, but is it overly used? maybe, but I'll give it a try anyway. i've always thought the first ideas coming mind are mostly the best and truest. don't overthink things.

after few days of fiddling away with beziers, the first flying pen was born. it looked like a little baby pen, with puffy wings lol :D i left my creation aside for few days. yeah, the babylook was getting boring quickly, so i made it a grandad. i had achieved, in my mind, the overall feeling i was after. the flying pen - which represents the freedom of creativity, peace and solidarity i see in a community of thinkers.
