carrara marble contrasts with exposed concrete in the 'geometry apartment' in krakow

at the edge of krakow‘s historic center, polish studio blackhaus karol cieplinski architekt  has turned a previously compartalized interior into a stylish home. as the name of the project suggests, the ‘geometry apartment’ is all about the consistent geometric division of space, as well as quality material finishes.

situated on the first floor of a modern tenement house, the modest 570.49 ft2 (53 m2) space was originally divided into 3 rooms, a corridor and a bathroom. the owners appointed blackhaus karol cieplinski architekt to break down the compartmentalized spaces and to make the apartment feel as open as possible.

having bought the property when the building was first constructed, the client wanted to keep the exposed reinforced concrete ceilings. they were made so well that even the randomness of the formwork helps to achieve a feeling of cozy yet orderly space. in the final design, all the walls have been demolished and rebuilt and the kitchen appears in the place of the hall.

despite being in one space, the living and kitchen zones of the apartment are clearly defined thanks to contrasting materials combined with a geometric play of shapes. the kitchen is lined with italian panels made with a carrara marble pattern. the rest of the house uses quality materials right down to bathroom. the exposed reinforced concrete ceiling continues into the bedroom, giving the design continuity and a geometric division that gives the apartment its order.
