spanish creative studio masquespacio presents the ‘la sastrería’ restaurant situated in the maritime neighborhood of canyamelar – cabanyal, in valencia, spain. applying artisan ceramic tiles to the whole interior, the design seeks to pay homage to the character of the area, generating a new culinary and sensorial experience.

the restaurant by masquespacio is divided into three parts, with each one making special references to the local neighbourhood. in the first part, one can find the bar zone that highlights the neighborhood itself, not only by making architectural references, but also by reflecting the local way of living in its design. this area intends to represent the act of taking fresh air (‘tomar la fresca’) during the warmest days, when the neighbors take their chairs out on the streets and come together for a chit chat. ‘we tried to recreate this habit in the interior, amongst others, through the reinterpretation of the plastic chairs used by the neighbors’ masquespacio’s creative director explains.

the interior features a variety of patterns made with customized tiles that reinterpret the façades of the neighborhood. special attention has been given to the bar, which looks like a complete façade on its own, with its ornaments and singular figures. in the middle, a centered selection of spirits draws the attention to the cocktail area.

the second part of the restaurant is characterized as the main attraction of the venue. here, the design recreates a large wave that grows toward the kitchen and is traduced into a sculpture made of ceramic pieces. the floors of artisan ceramic in white and blue allows visitors to experience the division between the water and the sand of the sea, while the chair design serves as a reference to the fishing boats.

here, the intent is to create an ocean scene, making visitors feel as if they are submerged underwater. the blue tiles and the ceramic wave installation draw the attention to the kitchen; the most important part of the restaurant. adding to the maritime style of the space, behind the kitchen, storage spaces are designed as in a fish market. concerning the materials, designers followed a main approach where tiles are used in two different ways: custom-made with prints designed by masquespacio for the bar zone, next to the handmade clay and ceramic tiles for the restaurant.
